How can I heal an injured rotator cuff?
Question:
Answers:
Depending on the severity of the injury, you may need an operation
Going to a doctor and getting a cortisone shot is a temporary fix. In the long run it could mess you up more possibly though.
Physical thearpy would be the standard of care, depending on how large is the tear. A physical therapist would perform an assessment as to your specific needs and tailor a program for you.
If it is torn, surgery and 6 months will fix it right up.
Check with an orthopedic surgeon.
Good luck
I had rotator cuff tendonitis and it took a whole 6 months of no weight lifting before it healed. OW!
My daughter had this problem too. We took her to a neurologist who checked this out. She was given cortisone shot and then referred to and orthopedic surgeon. He said it wasn't bad enough for surgery and prescribed therapy.
It worked, but on occasion with heavy lifting and excessive use it does have some pain.
First of all, "injured rotator cuff" can have many meanings. I take it we are talking about a strain or tendonitis type injury. A full-thickness tear will only heal with surgical help. A full tear is rare in a young person unless due to trauma. (Or major league baseball pitching!)
It may be as simple as rest, avoiding overhead activites, and strengthening with very light weights. Look up "rotator cuff exercises" on the web. A simple program of scaption & rotation exercises with rubber bands (internal & external) may due the trick. Ice for soreness or heat for stiffness.
