I have chronic pain. I get relief with higher legal limits of opoids. Are there any Dr.s who treat this way?

Question:
It's getting pretty tough to find a doctor who will prescribe narcotics for long-term pain management. I've tried all the "other" pain reducing options (dorsal implant, morphine pump, steroid blocks, massage therapy, pool work, ...) that are classified non-opoid. The implants nearly killed me, I've fallen twice and broken bones doing therapy, and I'm getting tired of being called an addict when I show up at an emergency room for treatment. Why are all the doctors afraid to practice their work with legal doses of narcotics? Finding a doctor who will prescribe the amount of medication I need is next to impossible. I was just turned away from a "Pain Clinic" as not treatable. Why? Because the only treatment that works for me is a high level of narcotics in my body. And today's healers are under scrutiny by the DEA. They can revoke a medical license for over prescribing. Who's helping the patient - Me? Why make medications if they can't be used?

Answers:
Yeah, this is a common problem, getting physicians to prescribe the correct dose of opiate. Physician's nortoriously underdose, which is medically incorrect. You have to slightly OVERdose in the beginning to get ahead of the pain, as though it's a wildfire, and then rachet it down a bit. In the long run, less medication is needed for a continuous maintenance dose that way than gradually building up, which never really puts the fire out, so to say. Certainly, those first few days on a large dose of opiate is going to knock you for a loop. But, a huge part of that "gorked" period is actually due to finally being comfortable enough to get deeper stages of sleep, which can't be obtained when you are in pain. Those deeper stages of sleep accumulate into a "sleep debt" that, when you finally achieve sufficient pain relief, you sleep like the dead for about two to three days to catch up on the debt. But, just as soon as that sleep debt is paid off and you have a few pain-free days and adjust the med as necessary after that, you'll be just as clear-headed as anyone else. Contact Purdue Pharma educational resources about MS Contin (morphine sulfate controlled-release) and ask them for information related to dosing. Their telephone number for more information about MS Contin is: 1 - 888 - 726 - 7535. They'll be able to help you with literature for you and your physician. Good luck.
Hi, my name is Ravishankar & I'm from India. I'm a qualified practicing Yoga Therpaist & Acupuncturist. I also practice the Ayurvedic Pulse Diagnosis.

To answer your problem, I may have to ask you certain question which will be related to your symptoms only.
Our science allows asking questions to arrive at the cause of symptoms, which can eliminate the symptoms for a long time to come. You may choose not to answer, but that may prevent me from diagnosing the problem.

I would like to the part of the body that is hurting or it is the whole body that suffering. Also the time from which you are suffering from this pain is also very important.

There are general suggestions to relieve pain in general. But when you can explicitly point out all your symptoms, however minor they are, I can help you with solving your problem by addressing the cause.

1. To avoid this pain, you need to alter the way you eat & drink. Stop drinking water with food. This will automatically help in increasing the digestive power in your stomach, improve the quality of your digestive enzymes & provide proper nutrition to your nerves & muscles. Drink water after half an hour.
After all, your muscles, nerves & all parts of your body depend on your for their nutrition & proper functioning. So, proper ingestion of food is important for the proper metabolic activity in your body.
2. Try to avoid eating & working at the same time. Also, while eating, do not talk or watch TV. Try to concentrate on your food, chew properly.
3. Try to sit down for 10 minutes after food. Let the digestive process begin.
4. Try to avoid eating late or sleeping late at night. Give a 2 hour gap between the last intake of food & sleep.
5. have a warm shower at least 45 minutes before you retire to bed.
6. 1/2 hour before you go to bed, have a glass of warm Milk (preferably cow's) diluting it half by water. Mix a tsp of Honey to it. The Milk should necessarily be lukewarm when you drink it. Let me know the result.

Their "explanations" are sometimes valid. There are many, many who exhibit drug-seeking behavior, and they probably wrongfully placed you in this category. They do track things. A lot of people hooked on pain pills will have seven or eight different docs in the area and use a bunch of different pharmacies so it's impossible to keep track of who's dispensed what and how much. But, it's a CYB (cover your butt) world, and if those patients get caught, it's a real danger to the physicians' licenses, EVEN IF THEY HAD NO KNOWLEDGE THEY WERE BEING SNOWED BY THE PATIENT. Sorry for yelling, but it's awful.

Having said that, and because the above sounds so disgusting and immoral, I hate to tell you that it's true pain sufferers that struggle because of the addicts. It's gotten to the point where getting a simple Darvocet pill for a nursing home patient with a broken hip that can't ever be set because of age or other debilitating conditions is a nightmare! It's awful.

**POLITICAL RANT**

Please legalize drugs with clear beneficial functions or recreational uses like you would alcohol or cigarettes. Dismantle the DEA and use the funding from all the taxes on the "entertainment" items to fund programs for a healthy country.

**POLITICAL RANT OVER***

In South American countries, everyone chews coca leaves. It's not smart to chew a few leaves and then strap a washing machine to your back and carry it down the street, but this is the other end of the extreme.

I hate it that I don't know how to suggest anything to you. Pain management is the last resort. You've mentioned nearly everything I've seen prescribed by general physicians, neurologists, neurosurgeons, surgeons, oncologists, etc. TENS unit wasn't on that list, though. Thought I'd toss that out there. I can tell you're at the "please, anything" stage.

Frustrating. Very, very frustrating. The first thing they teach you in nursing school is "you can't make snap judgments because you are the patient advocate," but then you're on the low end of the totem pole because those higher up on the food chain do make snap judgments.

Can you tell situations like yours flip my pissy switch? Big deal to me about pain control. Big, big deal. And I only use an occasional ibuprofen. But when you work a night shift and there are 100 people on the hall on which you work and 10 are moaning and crying all night, it becomes a big issue. And they can't fight for what they need, and I, the nurse, the patient advocate, can't get anywhere on their behalf, because of what you're experiencing.
I read a quote one time, went something like this:

"Modern medicicine is like the pony express after the introduction of the train. Why keep introducing faster horses when they will never outrun the train?"

I understand you are experiencing intense pain, but why keep going to medicine if it does not "fix" the problem? Maybe medicine is not the answer for you. If you are having pain, this is most likely a physical problem, not a chemical problem. There is nothing you can put in your gas tank to fix a flat tire. There are several options available to you that may help: Chiropractic, accupuncture, naturopathy, homeopathy, massage, etc. Medicine is great for trauma/emergency care, but not so good for long term pain management. That is why they have such a low succes rate with the chronic issues. As a chiropractor, I would evaluate you to find out why you were having the pain. This helps me determine how to correct the problem. Correcting the problem eliminates the symptoms. End of story. If you treat symptoms, you will spend a lifetime treating the symptoms. Although this wasn't the answer you were looking for, I hope it inspires you to think about your health, and the direction it is going. Good luck.
