Answers:
popping, cracking, or the feeling that your knee needs to pop are all symptoms of a possible meniscus tear. You may have a small flap of meniscus that is moving into the joint space between the femur and tibia, causing the popping and restricted motion. The fact that you can't really straighten it all the way out, and that you are having pain suggest that you should see your doctor for evaluation.
Knees are tricky. Usually if it cracks but doesn't hurt, it's ok. If you're feeling pain though, best to go straight to the doctor.
Better to catch something before it turns worse.
Good luck!
