Please help! If you're a doctor or someone who's had braces!?

Question:
Im 18 and have had my braces off since I was 13. Everytime I take my retainer out my jaw shifts and I get a headache. It's a matter of minutes before I have to put them back in because my head and mouth hurt so bad.
Does anyone know where to go to get it checked out?(someone who specializes in jaws i guess)
I have been to the doctors and my orthodontist and they said they didn't know. " I don't deal with those matters"
Does anyone have the same problem or know what to do about it?

I wan't to show off my pretty teeth without wearing retainers 24/7.
Thank you!

Answers:
I had braces when I was in high school from age 15-18. I have had mine off since Oct 1999. I have the same prob and I don't wear my retainers that much - once in a great while, yes... but not much enough. My orthodontist recommended wearing retainers but only at night. I don't even do that because my jaw does the same thing it hurts too much. My suggestion to you is continue to wear them even though it hurts and you have a headache. Those symptoms are only temporary. It's most likely because you haven't worn the retainers in awhile. Your teeth need to get use to them again. My front teeth hurt like hell when I first put them in but after I wear them awhile it stops. I know I feel the same way about wanting to show off my teeth without wearing retainers 24/7 but that's really not the best idea. Your teeth can shift back to the way they were before you had braces to begin with, and you could have to end up having braces and treatment all over again if they shift too much. I would also recommend going back to your orthodontist and maybe he/she can give you a cream or something to ease the pain while you have the retainers in?? I don't know. I have the invisible kind of retainers. Are yours metal or invisible? Good luck! I agree with the answer above me. It could be TMJ. Does your jaw click and make a grinding noise when you chew food at meals? Some people with TMJ have that problem. Has to do with the misalignment or improper alignment of the human jaw structure.
it might be TMJ (temporomandibular joint) syndrome.
