How do I know if it's just a "headache" or if it's really a migraine?

Question:
I don't know what's wrong with me. It seems as though I get (what I call) a headache at least once a week. It's usually dull yet quite fierce and persistent. I'd say it lasts a few days and then goes away. I try to take over the counter medication but it doesn't do anything. Unfortunately, I lose sleep because of the pain. Any suggestions? Or should I just grin, bear it and head to the doctor? *sigh*

Answers:
A headache can be caused by tireness, over hanging from alcohol, lack of sleep, stress, vision impair and body heatyness due to heat, food, improper diet, it usually attack the whole head and goes away when medication is applied. However prolong expose to such headache is no good. So the best way is to have a good habit in your lifestyle, remove alcohol, sleep well, good diet and remove stress. It will be good if you can take up some exercise, go out to the park, do some breathing exercise, enjoy yourself with light walking, meditation with good method of breathing. Smile often.

Migraine is an illness that prolong, it need medical advise from doctor, the pain usually occur in a specific part of the brain, be it left or right, upper or lower hemisphere, it is persistent. Some are caused by Tumor, some are caused by ear infection, some are by eyes inbalancing. It is good to have an MRI brain scan to analyse the situation. However, meditation such as yoga or those chinese qi gong help in a way of reducing the pain. Such exercise and breathing relax our brain and balance our system. Hope you can try it and see for yourself.

WIsh you well.
It maybe a migraine or even allergies. See your doctor. Both conditions can be treated.
Do you have to go to bed? With a migraine I usually do; plus I can't sleep because of the pain, OTCs only help slightly & upset my stomach - it's just gotta play out. I also get tension/muscular headaches that sound more like what you're describing.
I have the least problems with them when I'm exercising regularly, my abs are in good shape, and believe it or not, stretching regularly (like, my back, low back, legs, hip flexors, glutes).

It's most likely not too serious, but itd be good to go get it checked out at the doctors.
well when a headache or a migraine i can tell the difference. headaches are usually dull and can be taken away with OTC meds. and are all over my head .my migraines are bad.they tend to be more on the left side of my head. i cant watch TV, washing my hair makes it hurt more, sound, light, the list goes on and on.OTC meds do not take the pain away. the longer i wait the harder it is to handle and take the pain away. the pain has gotten so bad that i have needed to inject myself with a pain reliever called imatrex(i think that's how you spell it). as always your best bet is to go see your doctor.
It sounds like a stress and tension headache. If you had a migraine you would know it. A migraine hurts a lot. You would feel pressure, sensitivity to light and sound, and would need to take Imitrex to get rid of that. As for a regular headache Tylenol or Advil would work for that. I used to get stress and tension headaches. They now make OTC med's just for that kind of headache. I say go buy some and try it, it could help or it couldn't. But you wouldn't know unless you tried something. Good Luck!
I get really bad headaches myself...usually brought on by the stresses of my life. They've only become what I consider to be "migraines" within the past few years. If you suddenly become sensitive to light, the pain in your head is excruciating, and it actually makes you feel nauseous enough to throw up then...chances are, it's not just your typical headache. Personally, I take 3 Motrin tablets as soon as I feel one coming on, and that normally gets rid of it.
I have severe migraine problems and im on medication from a neurologist for it. But when those dont work i usually go to sleep by taking benadryl and it makes me pass out so when i wake up i feel a little better. A way to tell if it is a migraine are by certain symptoms: most likely the headache will only be on one side of the head, you would probably feel really nausiated, and maybe Vomit. You might have sensitivity to lights sounds, and smells. Honestly i recomend going to a neurologist because they can prescribe you something to help lessen the headaches, and do tests to make sure that it isnt anything more serious like a brain tumor.
Do not ignore the possibility that you may be hypertensive for any reason, but get it confirmed by your doctor. I used to have this problem but when it was diagnosed that I am hypertensive and started medication accordingly, it has never happened.
Put down the bourbon and drink more water for heavens sake, that would certainly help.

I've suffered from migraines in the past, and because the pain is so great, I seriously want someone to kill me. I have to lie down in a dark room with a damp cloth on my face and wait for it to pass. Compared to that a headache is mildly annoying, and can be cured with hydration, aspirin or ibuprofen.
