First of all don't stress about it cos that will only make it worse. Your best thing is to have a warm soothing bath scented with something like lavender and chamomile and lit with tea lights or candles. The darker you get it the more your brain will start to wind down. Have a cup of Ovaltine/Horlicks/Chocolate made with milk, it does work, and try a couple of slices of toast as to go to bed on an empty stomach is fatal for keeping you awake. If your mind is in overdrive you need to trick it into slowing down and switching off so, turn off your computer and telly, put something low and soothing on the radio, you don't even need to hear the words just get a gentle beat going, or if you have a nice soothing CD put that on. Still wide awake? Get a boring book, something that you would never read in a million years and open it at page one, I guarantee that you will get so tired that you don't reach the end of the first chapter if you do everything on my list. I did it reading the Ghormanghast book, I now class that book as one of my favourites because I can honestly say, hand on heart I read it religiously every day for 8 years! lol:)-

First, dont stress about sleeping.the more you think about it, the more you wont be able to do it...try going to bed a little early, and then let your mind just rest. Count sheep, drink warm milk or tea..or try getting another mattress...
I tend to drink myself into a coma when ever that happens to me. but the downside is that my head is more or less nailed to the pillow for the rest of the day.

you should try and not think about any stress and depression you are facing, concentrate on something that makes you happy

Try eating a couple of slices of toast about an hour before bedtime. Don't watch any television or play music before sleeping. Avoid drinking any hot liquids 4 to 5 hours before bed. Instead, read a book like an old classic, or something gently inspiring.
What could also help is to sit in another room and read, then go to the bedroom.
Get into bed and start reading any book about computers. After about 3 minutes 30 seconds, you will be fast asleep.

what i do when i cant sleep is, i lie in bed and close my eyes and refuse to open them, and dont twist and turn! i thin that if you keep your eyes open, you tend to look around and your keeping your mind going. it works with me eventually!..
you need to get active during the day . then a hot bath and read a book .
Exercise a whole lot.. You'll end up feeling tired and crashing on your bed at the end of the day.

Read an INCREDIBLY boring book... (maybe a school textbook or somethin)...
Play some nice, soothing, slow, soft music in the background when you go to bed...
Don't resort to alcohol or any other thing that causes drowsiness.. Getting rid of insomnia is simpler than getting rid of an addiction to things like alcohol or antidepressants!

Take time to unwind before going to bed.
Have a notebook and pen at your bedside. This is to note things down that come into your head about the following day. When you take note of it, you can then stop going over it all in your head again and again. It will be there for you to sort out when you get up the next day.
A warm bath and hot milky drink before bedtime can also help.
You can buy lavender linen spray from Avon which you can spray on your pillow and sheets in the morning.When you go to bed the lavender aroma helps relax you.
Read a book. When I tried this, I rarely managed any more than one chapter!
Have some peaceful music playing quietly after the lights are out. Most cd players automatically stop at the end of the cd so if you fall asleep it wont matter.

First be VERY wary of ANY sleeping pill. They are so addictive that if they are taken 3, yes THREE, nights in a row, that withdrawal and ADDITIONAL sleep difficulty can be demonstrated on the forth night if they are then not taken. Almost no GPs seem to be aware of the available evidence demonstrating this!
Do not read, exercise or watch TV for at least 30 minutes before retiring as these are all brain stimulants. Take a warm, caffeine free drink. Also try aromatherapy quality lavender oil either on the pillow, or in a warm bath before retiring.
Depression can be causing your insomia. By some tea from starbucks (lavendar) that should work or warm milk. Don't go near the tv, computer, anything that will stimulate you more. 1 hour before bedtime, drink a glass of tea (or warm milk), lay on your bed (piece and quite in the house) and read, you will be asleep before you know it.
Melatonin is a natural remedy that can be purchased at a health food store.
From the information supplied I would guess that you have hormone imbalance.
