Is coffee causing my indigestion?
Question:

Years ago, I was diagnosed with gastritis, which is inflammation of the stomach lining. It burned and I was told that it could lead to ulcers in my stomach. The very first thing the doctor told me was to give up any smoking and caffeine intake. It was rough but I noticed a HUGE difference when I stopped drinking so much coffee and tea. So I would venture to say that your increased intake of caffeine could very well be the problem.
I also suffer from acid reflux, and drinking coffee does make it worse for me. I love it though, so I've just had to cut back to a cup a day... sometimes two.
Coffee or any drink or food with high acid bothers my acid reflux.
On a very simple level, the causes of heartburn are associated with a lot of things, food being the main culprit. Coffee and chocolates being another, since heartburn for most people occurs after eating or drinking.
There is a good explanation for this its about the acids flowing back up into your gullet (esophagus).
To put it simply, your stomach produces acids when you eat or drink anything to better aid in the digestive process. And since there are more acids present in your stomach at this time, you have a better than average chance of getting heartburn.

People just don't seem to "get it" regarding coffee. Basically, its pretty bad stuff! Even taking decafinated coffee can cause stomach upsets and reflux. Stay away from ALL Caffeine and you will feel better right away. (Even tea is bad for tum-tums.)
