Soothing back pain?

Question:
My boyfriend has really bad back pain from a bulged disc and torn ligament. He is taking meds but they dont help much. I rub icy/hot on the area when its really bad. Is there anything else we can do to help with the pain? Especially while he is at his desk job?

Answers:
I know the answer..Oooohhhh pick me. Been there doing that. I had a car accident last Aug and as a result I have 2 bulged disc. I went to a Chiropractor and now my pain is minimal. I have a water pillow I sleep with, tens unit (compact and can use anywhere at anytime) and a back brace (came in a cool color) that I use when standing or sitting for long periods. Ibuprofen as well as ice is good for swelling and try to get Bio Freeze. It's better than any muscle cream out there. I swear by it! There's also a Shiatsu massage cushion I got at Wal Mart that has worked wonders. ( would have preferred my Chiropractors.lol) No vibrating but has rollers that massages your entire back or just sections. $99.99. Also available at Wal Greens. Good Luck.
Talk to his doctor about physical therapy ,it may be to early.
Try ice or heat on the area and try to get up and walk around if possible. It can hurt to change positions but I have 5 discs that are bad from bulging to tore and have found after the inflammation goes down that therapy works ,but you have to keep doing the exercises daily . It does help and the next time his back bothers him the other back muscles around the area are stronger and it cuts down on the pain also.
For now, there are special seat and back cushions that you can get to support your back in an office chair or in the car. Some of them even have built in heat and massage features, which do wonders. You can also get a back support belt, have him talk to his doctor about what he recommends. When at home, a heating pad is very soothing.

Once the inflammation goes down, physical therapy and an exercise program will help. I do Tai Chi, it's done wonders for keeping my back from hurting.
Your boyfriend may want to adjust his chair at work. Most people know to adjust the seat height to be comfortable but it is also important to adjust the seat back height. The push out part of the chair back (the lumbar support) should press against the belt line, not down low at the tailbone. He should remember to stand and walk around, too, not sit too long at one time.
He needs to take anti-inflammatory medications (probably what the doctor gave him) consistently so that the blood level stays up and doesn't rock around.
Sleep with a pillow between his legs if on the side and under his knees if on his back.
Try sitting in a recliner chair at home as this unloads the pressure on the spinal disks better.
Hopefully some of these ideas will work for him. He should also get a referral to a chiro or PT. A licensed acupuncturist may also be helpful. Good luck!
I have fibromyalgia with severe muscle pain. I take lots of pain meds, but sometimes I still have breakthrough pain. I use a cream I found at the hospital pharmacy. It's called Pain Rid. The number on the bottle is 1-888-577-6972. I know how bad it feels to hurt all the time and not have anything to help. A lot of doctors feel that if they give you pain meds that you just shouldn't hurt anymore. This Pain Rid gets rid of even my SEVERE pain in less than 10 minutes. Please try it.
