Taking Hydrocodone?

Question:
I'm taking Hydrocodone, for sciatica. It says to take every 6 to 8 hours as needed for pain. I take it, but it doesn't last long. I get the pain back in about 2 hours. Does it take a couple of days before your body can feel relief?
Thank you,
Lorraine

Answers:
No, you are getting about as much relief that you are gonna get from the way it is prescribed. It should have been every 4 to 6 hrs, minimum. Especially with Sciatic pain.
When I was first treated for sciatic pain, I was prescribed the hydrocodone and also a medication called Ultram (tramadol) which is another pain reliever, but it is not yet on the narcotic list. It helped to enhance the power of the Hydrocodone.

Call you doctor and let them know that it isn't enough to give you the relief that you need. They know how painful your condition is, and I'm sure that they will adjust it for you. You must have relief from the pain, and be able to relax a bit in order to start to recover from sciatica, or at least arrest it.
Good Luck, I hope you find the relief that you deserve!!

Now that I think about it, you should have probably be prescribed something else to stop the inflammation of the nerve, my doctor usually had me on Prednisone for about a week, it always worked wonders!!
You may need to take a bigger dose, but ask the Doc. Also be careful with that as it can be addictive, and it can cause constipation, so drink plenty of water.
For the first few days you may have to take it every 6 hours as directed to get it into your system and then just take as needed. Don't take tylenol in addtion to this because the hydrocodone has tylenol in it and it will damage your liver. In addition to the hydrocodone you can take an anti-inflammatory like Aleve or Advil, this will reduce the inflammation and help you to feel better faster. Also applying ice will help as well.
You can try it for a few to several days to see how your body reacts once it's in your system.
Have you ever tried celebrex? I like that but not the possible heart attack side effects and how long it takes.
I took hydrocodone for a while and don't like it. If your pain continues coming back that fast but in the beginning it takes it away or the edge off it, you can ask your doctor to switch to a new family of similar medications, increase the frequency of it, add on another type medication in addition, or change it to something else.
Sciatica is from inflamation from the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body. The Hydrocodone is for pain but will not stop the cause of the problem with the nerve. Something is pressing on it. My experience with the same problem is to put cold compression of ice on the area for 10 min at a time off and on, don't sit for more than 30 min at a time without changing positions and moving, and go to a chiropractor if possible. The chiropractor will relieve the pressure by different treatments and also do therapy treatments. That is how I got rid of my problem, the regular Dr. didn't help a bit just drugged me up. It took a couple of weeks for mine to feel better and months to heal.
My advice to you is that if the medication within a week is not doing what you expect it to do call your doctor so they could either put up the dose or give you something else. Wish you luck
your doc just wrote it like that but you can take1-2 tablets every 2 hrs
