Bruised finger nail?

Question:
My son smashed his finger in the car door about a month ago. He has had a black mark under this nail for about a month and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. I was wondering if I should have a doctor look at that nail or am I making too much out of it. My son says that the finger nail does not hurt. Anyone have any advice or experience with this?

Answers:
if it's been a month the blood under the nail is dry and nothing will come out so putting a hole in the nail is just opening up an area for bacteria. the nail will grow out and with it the blood under it.
there is really nothing to do now but wait.
if this ever happens again the usual treatment is to take a needle and heat it up till red on the end and touch it to the injured nail. the needle being so hot will go right through the nail and the trapped blood will come right out. by doing this the pain is relieved because the pressure of the blood is gone.
I slammed my finger in a car door once too. The reason it is black, is that there is trapped blood under the fingernail. As long as it doesnt hurt, it shouldnt really need to be looked at. The doctor might try and suck some of the blood out with a needle or suggest removing the finger nail. However, for the most part, the nail will eventually grow out and will stop being black. Mine took a few months to grow out. It is also possible, youre son might loose his finger nail during the growing out process. This is completely normal as well. Just make sure he keeps it clean so as to not get an infection.
