Blood pressure medication .. ?

Question:
I have been taking Natrilix 2.5mg ( Indapamide Hemihydrate ) for years to control BP. The GP raised them some years ago to two tablets daily when the BP went up a tad. He even suggested three tablets daily when my BP became unstable during a crisis. But this week, on a repeat prescription, my new GP has stated that one tablet a day is all that is necessary as anything beyond that only raises the diuretic action and has no additional effect on BP. Anyone 'in the know' please comment on this ... appreciate sensible answers only please!

Answers:
Your new GP is absolutely correct. There is NO additional benefit in any dose greater than 2.5mg. The only difference is that you get increased risk of side effects such as salt loss. If your BP is not controlled on 2.5mg then the guidelines recommend an additional medicine but from a different group such as ACE inhinbitor or calcium channel blocker - depends upon your age and other medical history.

Your new GP sounds spot on.
you can find that out if you google it
Your second GP is correct.Thiazide diuretics are used as a first line treatment of hypertension. There beneficial action in lowering blood pressure is not increased with increasing dose and either an alternative or additional drug will be needed if your blood pressure remains high. Stopping the extra tablets should not increase your blood pressure.
I would go with the second GP...He seems to have your best interest at heart.
This is a quite normal procedure. You take large amounts of the medication to start with until the desired improvement is obtained and then you keep taking a reduced amount to maintain the improvement. If the problem reappears then you may have to increase the amount again.
sorry no idea.
