It's natural of course, but I would still go to the Doctors to get it checked.
Ok - so you have probably broken it - the nail will fall off but it will grow back, there is not much you can do to repair it as it needs to do that on its own.
Get some ice and wear thongs and not shoes.
Your poor bugger - its the worst thing hurting your big toe.

well...your nail might fall off. but that's not really anything to worry about. it will grow back :) if it's really painfull you might have broken your toe
It certainly sounds as though you've broken it. Unfortunately, there's not much that can be done for a broken big toe; even an emergency room will just "buddy-tape" it to your second toe and have you wear those wooden-soled shoes until it heals. The nail will probably fall off; this happens because blood gets in between the nail and the nail bed and forces them apart, so the nail can't "hang on." The nail will grow back, though, so the main thing for now is simply to protect your foot.
