It could possibly be nerve pain. It typically starts off as a tingling or burning sensation and can progress to total numbness / loss of use.
You didn't say where the pain was, but it might be sciatica - a condition where the sciatic nerve is pinched. She should see a doctor very soon to get evaluated. If it's not treated, and it is sciatica, it could progress to reduced ability to use her foot.
