Question:
My father suffered a stroke and has been in ICU for the past couple of days and is expected to be in the hospital for the next couple of months. He is incapable of making his own decisions and he just recently divorced his wife, so therefore I am his power of attorney. We recently found out he does not have health insurance, I have no idea what to do next. He does not own a house or his car, so basically he has nothing to give. What will happen next, will he not be treated? How will the bills be paid? Are they going to go after myself for payment? What steps do I need to take?
Answers:
You need to take to someone at the hospital to help you file paperwork to get your father enrolled for Medicaid and Medicare. If he doesn't have any assets (no money, no car, no house) there shouldn't be any problem getting him approved - then the government will take care of the majority of the bills and it is possible that the hospital will write off the remainder of any bills after Medicare/Medicaid pay. And just because you are power of attorney - that does NOT make you financially responsible for his bills and dont let them try to make you think that!
They can not not treat him even if he doesn't have insurance. You need to go to the administration office and they can set up payments for him. At this point worry about getting your father healthy. I don't think they can come after you for payment.
