Question for a doctor?

Question:
if someone shattered 3 discs in the lower back causing paralisis how long does one expect to stay in hospital and would they be allowed to return home after a week because a parent is a retired medic. what is the usual proceedure to care for such a patient

Answers:
Noooooo. The patient would not be going home a week after the accident. Even if there were no other complications (which is highly unlikely) the patient would have to have some kind of surgery to stabilize the broken bones/remove fragments. The patient would be hospitalized for probably several weeks, then would be transported directly to a rehabilitative hospital and would stay there for probably 1-2 months...maybe more. They must heal from the injury and learn how to function as a disabled person.
Usually some time of rehab or long term care facility. Would like more details.
Paralysis means the spinal cord is cut. There are partial and complete cord cuts. This type of damage causes the cord to swell. Patients must be kept in hospital to allow the cord to settle down, the bones must be stabilized, the patient must be taught to deal with loss of bowel and bladder control, transfer without use of the legs and so on. This is a major injury. If you are wanting someone home, this is not the time to want that. If someone is home after one week, the chances are that this was not the injury you are asking about.
