Is pectus excavatum hereditary?

Question:
There really isn't much information about this on the internet...I'm curious if pectus excavatum is hereditary?

Answers:
I have to be honest I've only heard of 1 person every having this and it is very rare. Apparently it is the most common chest wall birth defect and 1 in 300 children will have it. My books say that it is partially hereditary but not completly. I hope i answered your question, my book oddly enough gave a great reference to a site. Good Luck!
I believe it is because I have a friend I've known for over 40 yrs and he always referred to his chest as his "Harmon" hole. His last name is Harmon. He says that a lot of the men in his family have it. Several years ago, he suffered periodically with acid reflux (for days!) because of a malformed valve at the top of his esophagus. He's fine now, and never had really done anything about it. He's 66 years old now
