Bruised foot possible fracture?
Question:
Well, I went swimming today, Public pool = Cement pool. And as I went to kick, I kicked the pool wall not with my toes but some how with the top of my foot. I heard my foot crack when it happened because I was under the water. Now its bruised and really swollen, and I can't put much pressure on it. I am able to move my toes, but when I try to move my foot up and down it hurts to badly, therefore I can't even walk on it. So my question is, is it possible that its just bruised or is there a good possibility that it may be fractured. Cant get to the hospital tonight, and I have to work tomorrow morning (God help me) Thanks in advance
Answers:
Pain, swelling, and sometimes bruising are the most common signs of a fracture in the foot. If you have a broken toe, you may be able to walk, but this usually aggravates the pain. If the pain, swelling, and discoloration continue for more than two or three days, or if pain interferes with walking, something could be seriously wrong; see a doctor as soon as possible. If you delay getting treatment, you could develop persistent foot pain and arthritis. You could also change the way you walk (your gait), which could lead to the formation of painful calluses on the bottom of your foot or other injuries.
go to the doctor
Might want to try going to the ER, sounds like somethings fractured, if you walk on it , you will only make matters worse. Try some ice & elevation overnight & maybe some ibeprofen also..
It's quite possible that it's broken. Before doctors do an x-ray, they have you do simple motions with the affected area, and if it hurts bad then its probably broken.
This is a most likely a broken fifth metatarsal. This is the bone on the outside of the foot, that connects with the toe. I have broken mine before and your symptoms sound exactly the same. IT is not an urgent visit to the hospital, however do go and get x-rayed. In the meanwhile take some painkillers and wrap the foot with a bandage tighly in order to help get the swelling down. You can look forward to your foot changing colors from red to blue to regular and back again, so don't panic.
Matter of fact my mom just broke her 5th metatarsal and its healing very quickly. You should be able to get around within a few days but step on your heels only.
I hope its not broken, but if it is I hope my advice helps you
Sorry mate, the consensus is it sound like a fracture of some sort.
It is possible to move your toes and foot with a fracture. So this is not a good indicator, For positive you need xrays done. In the mean time, if the pain is getting to you try taking Tylenol. Ibuprofen can be used also as an anti-inflammatory agent to reduce the swelling. Also pay attn. to your blood circulation in your toes. This is a good indicator of tissue profusion to your foot. Squeeze your toenail down and release it, you should see the blood come back into the nail in less than 3 seconds. If it's delayed it could be a sign of impaired circulation (although rare).
Keeping your foot elevated above your heart as well. This allows the fluids to return back to your body reducing swelling and pain sometimes.
Good luck..
Well, if it swelled immediately it could be fractured. Put ice on it for 15 minutes no more than 20, every three hours faithfully! You probably should go to the doctor too!
