12 hours of sleep and still groggy during the day?

Question:
During the summer vacation, I've gotten into a routine of going to bed at 3:00 A.M. and waking up at 3:00 P.M. I sleep solidly through, not getting up at all, and yet I'm groggy when I get up, I yawn for the rest of the day and evening, and I feel very tired if I'm woken up before 3:00, even if I've gotten 8 hours of sleep. During school days, I'm forced to have a more conventional schedule, getting around 8 hours of sleep a night. I have a hard time getting up in the morning and yawn all day. Is this normal? Should I get checked out?

Answers:
sounds like your body is having a hard time adjusting to the bouncing back and forth of sleep schedules.

i work nite shift and on my days off of work-i have a more routine schedule, going to bed at 9p and getting up at 7a to take my kids to school.

on the days i work, i go to bed around 9a and get up at 5:30p. i don't feel rested if i wake before 5:30.

i've been doing this schedule for 3 years now so my body is adjusted but for you who is not used to it-you will struggle. our body's naturally fight a night shift awake time b/c it's not normal.

i would try sticking to a somewhat normal routine even in the summer time. try to get to bed no later than 11pm and wake around the time you normally do. this should help you not feel so tired. for the first few months, you might feel groggy, even with 8+ hours of sleep b/c you body needs time to adjust. once adjusted you should feel much better.

the 12 hours of sleep you were getting was too much for your body, which is why you felt tired all day.

hope this helps!!
its normal for some. some people have a different internal clock, i am one of them. the "first shift" mantra does not work for me, i prefer a 2nd shift schedule so i can get quality sleep.
You sleep too much. Try cutting down to about 6 hours and get plenty of exercise.
you're probably getting too much sleep and may not be active enough during the day. the last two months i'd get 8 hours of sleep on the weekends, the other days i'd usually get 6. sometimes less, sometimes more.
It's normal.
When you wake up, your body is still try to return to its normal state.
But you might want to go to bed BEFORE 12 AM, and try to wake up after or around 8 am.
get checked out. i use to be like that but i was lazy... but i never slept 12 hours. that must be nice. i got some blood test done to rule of any thyroid problems. and my doctor also sent me to talk to therapist to make sure i wasn't depressed! I dont think that it is normal...even if your going to bed late...8-9 hours should be enough time to get yourself back together and it sounds like you dont have a job or anything so get checked out by your doctor!
its that 12 hours is way 2 much sleep..
You're sleeping too much.
May be worth examining your diet. Also quality of sleep is more important than quantity. For example, if you are falling asleep to the sound of a radio or TV, you are not getting the same quality of sleep as you would in a silent room.

The other option is that if you have recently gone through a period off stress or illness, your body may be trying to "catch up", in which case, let it happen.
You have probably heard the old adage of one hour before midnight equals two hours after midnight.
In reality the body is programmed to rest during the hours of darkness and going to bed at 03:00 is asking too much of your body clock to adjust. If you are not getting up until mid-afternoon it is reasonable to assume that you are not getting enough exercise, sunshine and fresh air
If you are honest with yourself you know what you have to do for the sake of your health. JUST DO IT!
I go through the same routine as you. :) I think that much sleep (12 hours) is too much sleep for your body. I think that you should have at most 8 or 9 hours.
take it from someone who does that, my mothers says its because im not doing anything in the day then nothing at night so my body just becomes lazy. ween yourself off the sleep mate. i was doing this for years, now i make it routine to go bed before 12am and wake up at 9 and walk my dogs. i feel so much better, and i can still do what i do in the mid of the night in the day, mainly becasue all i do is watch tv and surf the internet.
