Unexplained lower back pain?

Question:
My boyfriend didn't do anything out of the ordinary, he was just standing around outside, when he suddenly felt a severe pain in his back while walking. He felt the pain mostly when stepping down on his left foot only. Sitting is ok and laying down is ok in certain positions. rolling over hurts. he is using crutches to walk, the pain is so severe!
we don't know what is causing the pain. what should he do?
any ideas on what could be causing this? Joints, muscles, nerves? help!

Answers:
This happened to me not too long ago and I was on the couch for two weeks! It is either a muscle spasm in the lower back and buttocks that pinch the sciatic nerve, which is your best option, or it might be a "slipped disc" which puts pressure on the spinal column and can become a serious problem if not treated. I would see a chiropractor or back specialist (I saw the back specialist, but it was super expensive). He prescribed me three medications for pain and inflammation. Until then, or if you can't get to the doctor, you'll need an anti-inflammatory, Advil or Aspirin, to relieve some of the pain, and don't try to walk it off! Just rest it as much as possible.
could be a pinched nerve, but if it doesnt go away he should probably see a doctor
Sounds like he has nerve compression in the foraminal part of his spine. He needs to see a Neurologist ASAP, get an MRI and see what's going on inside. The longer he waits, the greater the chance of permanent damage.

Bottom line ... it' won't just go away. Get it checked out.
Since he felt the pain in his back, that is probably where it is originating. Sounds like he has a slipped disk ( located between the vertebrae of the spine.) He should see a doctor ASAP, and if anyone mentions surgery, please, get a second opinion. Not every back problem or injury requires surgery. In the meantime, he needs to find a comfortable position to lay around in.
Been there, done that more than once, including last week. In my case, it is sciatica caused by pressure on the left sciatic nerve as a result of an injury.

yes, it HURTS to put that foot down! I was put on rest and medication and given crutches to use and it goes away in a few days. It took care of me ever playing golf again.
he might have a compressed disk in the lower lumbar or sacral region. this might be the start of sciatica. self help is warm compress and anti-inflamatory. dr help involves an xray and a chiropractor.
it's probably from sex . no joke. next time you should be on top. I had the same problem it a lot of work that goes in to the trusting from behind.
It sounds like he has Sciatica. Inflammation of your Sciatic nerve. It can be caused from anything from walking the wrong way to not warming up before exercise. The only beneficial treatment is ice within the first 24 hours and pain reliever with an anti inflammatory in it. After 24 hours he should try to GENTLY stretch his left leg, even if it hurts. Gentle is the key though, he doesn't want to add anymore injury. I get this alot too and although painful it's harmless and really does get better.
