Are these normal withdrawal symptoms from cigarettes?

Question:
Well I quit smoking about 4 or 5 days ago, and right now im feeling bad. My cough has gotten much worse, and I can feel crud in the back of my throat. and I have been feeling chest discomfort. and heavy chested. Also my breathing is not the same. Feels like im not getting enough air, so I gasp in more. This makes the chest pain worse, and my heart beat faster. Also having very mild dizziness feeling.
I was scared I might be having a heart attack or something. But if I don't breath as much it feels better.

I think it might be because my body is not used to this much oxygen? Is this normal? what can I do?

The doctor is not a preferred option right now!

thanks

Well, unfortunately, I smoked for 17 years, quit for 9 years and started back on a bad day. ;) Anyway, when I quit (cold turkey) - I was coughing up stuff for months. Went through a period where I would also choke half to death once or twice a day while trying to cough it up. But your lungs repair themselves. You may want to try to do deep breathing a few times a day, rather than trying not to breathe - this will also help with the anxiety of quitting. Also, drink a lot of water (preferably not tap water).

I wish you the best and if you do smoke again, at least smoke one that is 100% tobacco. I saw some people post on yahoo that the cig companies don't put anything in them. I couldn't believe my eyes when I read that - there is a list of about 599 additives that they put in cigarettes. People please stop believing all the corporate propaganda. And for those who don't know - American Spirit cigarettes has been bought out by R.J. Reynolds.
your doing fine your body is just getting rid of the poison but if you want to feel better and monitor your quiting see how much better your lungs are doing and stuff then see your doctor. my boyfriend and I smoked for 6 years and we quit cold turkey without any aids or anything. We coughed up straight black crud for a week or so. Not only is your body getting used to absorbing so much more oxygen but your nose is repairing itself as well. soon your favorite meals and your favorite scents will taste and smell better to you. i couldn't smell or taste anything at all before i quit. but you should feel excellent in about a month. No more coughing at all. also they heavy chested feeling is nothing more than anxiety. if you have problems sleeping (which is what you should do most of the time while you quit) drink some chamomile tea.
Its a anxiety attack due to the stopping smoking
you will be fine
Take 1 Aspirin if you are concerned about a heart attack

Congrats on decided to take charge of your life and get healthy
You can do it
You shouldn't quit cold turkey.

I heard by a forum on myspace that if you reduce just by 1 cigarette per day, you will live 180 days longer.

Afterall, 400 years from now--will it matter if you lived to age 75 vs age 65?

Actually, you'll be less of a drain on social procurity if you live less.

Life isn't about the number of breaths we take, but the number of breaths that take away (which implies smoking is for some people... but its not for everyone)
All sounds normal to me. If you want my unprofessional opinion as an ex smoker here it is. Your mind is panicking and telling your body to react any way possible to get nicotine.Your mind is in a state of panic and you need to calm down or the cigarette will win and I believe you are stronger than a cigarette. CALM DOWN AND RELAX YOU WILL WIN.
I don"t think you are having normal withdrawals at all, I have smoked for 36 years and have quit smoking 5 or 6 times, i did not go through any thing like what you are describing. I have a bad heart and nearly had a heart attack one time and I was feeling the way you are describing your symptoms, I strongly recommend you see a doctor at a clinic , hospital , Emergency Room or were ever, but i really think you should as quick as possible, I simply don"t know what else to advise you , because you sound so much like you are having a heart attack , or may have already had a mild one that needs to be treated !
First congrats!! I am next with quitting (3rd attempt this time) and yes, chest pressure, headache, sore throat, coughing, mucus, light headed, mood swings, all this is the wonderful experience of withdraw and recoup from nicotine and smoke.
BUT the good thing is, it is temporary, my father and husband both quit, dad quit after his heart attack when he was in his late 40's- he is now 72, my husband quit about 5 yrs ago and he coughed a lot, felt horrible, had cravings, but this only lasted about 2 weeks if that- I think more like slightly over a week. But the cravings continued for a few months- they are short lived and you overcome them.
Let's just see how well i do now, I have 2 packs and I want to quit no later than after the 1 pack is done.
First off.Congrats on quitting. Best decision you will make in quite some time. I have a yahoo group for people quitting smoking with extensive files, links, news etc. which will easily answer every question you might have regarding quitting smoking. I jthink I have two different files up just on withdrawals. Feel free to have a look and ...Hang In There......R
