Excrutiating ear pain?

Question:
For the past two years I have had a constant discomfort in my left ear. Actually, it was a pain, but I have grown accustomed to it so now it is just a discomfort. Four times in this period it has gotten severe and I end up crying and going to the doctor. The first time he pulled a piece of hardened wax off my eardrum; still discomfort. Next, he treated me for a sinus infection; still discomfort. Next, he gave me ear drops. I had to back to him every week for a month, each time getting stronger drops. He then irrigated my ear; still discomfort. The pain went away each time, but the discomfort stayed and pain came back. My hearing has become muffled, more when the severe pain comes on. My ear feels like somebody is holding a hot match in it. Feels like it is in my throat around my tonsils too at times. What could this be?

Answers:
My usual advice to people seeking medical help here is to tell them to go to a doctor.

In your case, it doesn't sound like your doctor is doing you any good.

It's time to demand to see a eye, ear, nose, and throat specialist if you haven't already, and if you have, it is time to get a second opinion.

Don't rely on anything else anyone here tells you, because even if the person has your symptons it does not follow that you both have the same condition nor is it the case that the treatment that worked for one will work for both.
Please see a ear nose and throat DR asap..
IT sounds to me that you have fluid in your ears and that your sinus ducts are not clear, also if you dry you bed clothes in the dryer , leave out the bounce sheet . This can also cause problems . I would def see a ENT and mention all of the above. If your are like me using to much drops will only irrate it more.
First off, are you taking medication for another condition?

I ask you this because my bf went through a very similar experience. He was put on Wellbutrin (to treat his depression) a few years ago by his former psychiatrist. A few months later, he started to feel "discomfort" in his ears. He said that it was painful at first but then it just became "very uncomfortable". He felt that his ears were "clogged" all the time. He went from one specialist (ENT) to another all over New York City . He even went to the so-called "top" doctor at Columbia University's Medical Center but even he couldn't find the solution. Two years went by and he just learned to "live" with this horrible ear discomfort... and then he changed to a new psychiatrist. This new psychiatrist had read up an earlier study of participants in the clinical trials of Wellbutrin that mentioned that two out of a few thousand participants experienced ear discomfort/pain. Two people are not enough number of people to mention on a drug label as a possible side effect. That's why no one made the connection between Wellbutrin and the ear discomfort. The new psych took him off Wellbutrin and his ear discomfort disappeared over night.

So it could be that you are taking a medication that doesn't state the side effect of ear pain/discomfort. Or perhaps you are exposed to something in your house or workplace that's irritating your ears?

I'm sorry you are going through this. My bf feels your pain.

We wish you the best.
