It's called a charlie horse and it's when the muscle contracts violently and seems to stay that way for a period of time. You need to get more potassium and other nutrients in your and take vitamins. If you do get another one, massage the muscle and put ice on it. The pain will not be helped by ibuprofen or any other pain alleviate, you just have to wait for it to pass. Sorry, I know they suck I used to get them all the time.
Sometimes leg cramps are caused by potassium deficiency, which you can remedy easily by eating bananas.
Im not sure, but it could have been a way you stretched in your sleep.
I can't know what caused it. If you're a kid, it could just be growing pains. If you're a grown up, or mostly grown up, it could be magnesium deficiency. Stretch when you get up and when you go to bed, be sure to get your exercise and wear shoes that fit properly, make sure you're hydrated and try taking extra magnesium for a few days and see if you feel better.
I think it may be a lack of calcium.(I know--Huh? What?) Low calcium can cause muscle cramps.
Try drinking milk and eating bananas and see if it helps.And yes,magnesium helps with any pain management.A lack of it will bring on pain and stiffness in the muscles.
Minerals are critical for the body to work right.You can take calcium,magnesium and potassium as a combination in a pill.
Kroger or any good grocery store will have them.They will be cheaper there than in a health food/vitamin store.

* Muscle fatigue
* Heavy exercise

Try about a tablespoon of APPLECIDER VINAGER.Sometimes a packet ot yellow mustart or a sip of pickle juice. This has worked for family for many years. You also need to get your POTASSIUM checked.
here is a couple of streches i use to relieve ppain from that sort of thing. 1st one- put both hands on wall, palms flat. start by putting one foot back and the other forward. now lean over and make your back foot flat and put some weight on it and you will feel a strech on your calf.
2nd one- stand with the balls of your feet on the first step of the staircase and bounce up and down applying weight to the calfs.
♥ Sounds like you had a "Charlie Horse". Sometimes this is caused by lack of calcium, so try getting some more calcium. It can also be caused by inadequate blood flow... so its quite possibly could be the way you slept.
Good Luck!
Sounds like you had a Charlie Horse attack.
You are probably deficient in potassium, calcium, magnesium or Vitamin B6.
