I'm having surgery on my shoulder and I have a question?

Question:
I work out all the time, and I'm having a scope surgery on my labrum tendon and I was wondering how much I could lose muscle wise during the recovery process. I plan on staying active like walking and eating healthy, but is there something I could do to help keep my muscle mass? Thanks for all your help.

Answers:
There is very little you can do. If you attempt to keep muscle mass through some form of exercise, you risk, and probably will, re-injure or damage the surgical repair. Accept that you will be temporarily weaker (and maybe permanently slightly weaker) and do not try to start exercising too soon or too hard. That would be a huge mistake. You will make it worse and lose even more muscle mass. I would wait months or even a year before serious exercise. Remember it is considerably harder to repair an area that has already been surgically repaired. So if you need this surgery again because you have damaged the area again...You will be extremely dissatisfied and will probably never return to 95 to 100% recovery. You may be only 85 to 95% recovered FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!
