See a doctor. Disorders like sleep apnea, where a person stops breathing during sleep, can cause poor sleep. If she's not sleeping due to pain, a doctor should be able to give her something to help her sleep and/or control her pain.

Many elderly people are like this. For some reason, they don't seem to need as much sleep during the night. But, does she nap during the day? Fall asleep while watching TV?? Usually, the elderly will take small periods of rest vs. sleeping from 9PM to 5 or 6 in the am. Does she complain of feeling tired but can't sleep?? How long has this been going on?? it could be insomnia as well. All of us experience insomnia at some time in our lives, this is normal. I hope that this helps.
