It is best to see a doctor and get a confirmed diagnosis. But, in the meantime, if the pain is centered in a muscular tissue area, it is probably due to muscle strain. If you have difficulty holding your head straight and level in relation to the rest of your body, you could have a case of torticollis. The main muscle involved in this is the sternocleidomastoid. It runs from a point just below the ear and behind the jawbone down to the clavicle. You could try gentle self-massage of this muscle by running your thumb along the path of the muscle. Do not use so much pressure that it is painful.
One of the best things for muscle strain is Arnica gel. You can buy it in a health food store or in the health food section of a grocery store. Follow the directions on the container. And please see a doctor to get a professional's advice on what is acutally going on with your neck.
I've had that problem for a long time, could be tension or a muscle problem. Mine has turned into a pinched nerve and now is causing a shoulder problem. Try to get some therapy but do not see a chiropracter I did and think thats what caused my shoulder problem.
