Why can't I sleep?

Question:
I have been prescribed Ambien but as soon as I lay down and start to doze, my heart starts racing, almost like a panic attack, and I can't go to sleep. I'm getting to old to work 12-15 hour days on no sleep. any suggestions

Answers:
i strongly suggest valerian root. it's great at relieving stress and tension! you can get it over the counter and it's a great sleep aid! if you have one of those "racing minds" or "i can't turn my head off no matter how tired i am" then this will definitely help. you can find at your local grocery store in the pharmacy or herbal remedy section. start off taking 500-1000mgs, 30-45 minutes before you go to bed. now you can get this stuff in capsule form and it's 100% safe (my whole family has been taking it for years and our family doctor actually recommended it) however the only downside is that the more potent the brand your taking the stronger the smell. and this stuff smells AWFUL! but it's worth it. within 5-7 days you should notice a definite change in your sleep.

WARNING! i strongly do not suggest that you take Tylenol PM and booze, in any form or combination. the main ingredient in Tylenol PM and Advil pm, or benadryl for that matter is diphenhydramine. here's what happens when you take it:
You can walk into a drugstore and choose from an array of sleep aids, offered without prescription. The main ingredient of over-the-counter sleeping pills is an antihistamine. Antihistamines are generally taken for allergies, but also make you feel very sleepy. Common over-the-counter sleep medications are Sleep-Eze, Sominex, Nytol, and Unison; they contain antihistamines such as:

diphenhydramine hydrochloride,
diphenhydramine citrate, or
doxylamine succinate.
In general, over-the-counter sleep medications are not a good choice because they:

Are not intended for long-term use.
Interfere with mental alertness during the day, so you should avoid driving and other similar tasks. You may also be at risk for falling asleep
Reduce the quality of your sleep by reducing time you spend in deep sleep.
Use over-the-counter sleep medications only for transient or short-term insomnia and in conjunction with changes to your sleeping habits. Be sure to pay attention to your body’s physical response to these sleep medications.

also look at the links on the website i've listed they have some good remedies!

I hope this helps!
Have you talked to your doctor about sleep disturbances? Sometimes a sleep problem can be detected with a sleep study and treated more effectively. It's usually for people with sleep apnea, but works for people with other sorts of sleep problems too. That is one way to find out what the issue specifically is.
Hi lizajane,
This can't go on any longer. I was 40/41 when I started having sleep problems that would keep me up a week, 10 days or perhaps a bit longer before I could sleep again. My pulse rate was 100 to 130 and finally it started skipping beats. I went to the hospital and wound up under the care of a creepy-serpent heart doctor taking pills to slow down my heart rate which didn't work very well. At age 46 I had an epileptic seizure like the one I had at age 21 after I got discharged from the Marine Corp. I told the doctor about it and he said I had a "heart attack" and sent me home wired to a heart monitor. My 4 children aged 16 to were so worried I took the whole mess off and went straight back to the heart clinic and returned it. I also trashed the worthless heart pills.

I went to the Veterans Hospital and they did a work up of my 5 year history of having a problem getting to sleep. A VA nurse asked me all sorts of questions and typed or mouse clicked answers into a computer. Next a VA medical doctor saw me and referred me to a VA Mental Health Clinic.

I was put in group therapy for PTSD and also treated for hypomania and epilepsy issues with Depakote aka divalproex. It was like a miracle happened! I COULD SLEEP
AGAIN! I've slept good for the past 11 years. My VA electrocardiograph results are a normal sinus rhythm according to computer analysis.

lizajane, if you are working 12 to 15 hours per day your under a lot of stress. My advice is don't over look asking about stress and its effects and causes. Look up Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Stress in a search engine like google.
