Back/hip/knee Problems: Can massage therapy be helpful or hurtful before starting an exercise regime?

3 years post discectomy L5S1. Overweight, burcytus in left hip and bad knees (knees from all the compensation?) Would having massage therapy for an undetermined amount of time be helpful or hurtful before starting an exercise regime?
