Excessive daytime sleepiness - help - im so tired?
Question:
I can fall asleep in a matter of seconds, and start dreaming straight away. I am always tired, when in work, when driving, when i do anything. I can sleep for 16 hours without any problems and still be tired, if i have 8 hours sleep im tired.
Ive tried more sleep, less sleep, fixed times, bath and walm milk before bed, but no matter what i do i am always so tired and it is really affecting my life. I have recently been on a 2 week holiday to Tunisia, and i was so tired that i spent all my evenings in bed, i could only stay awake for about 12 hours a day. Its the same at home, i just cannot keep awake.
Do you have any suggestions? Should i see my doctor? What can i do to solve this as it is causing me so many problems with my life and affecting my quality of life.
Please help!
Answers:
Go and see your quack! Make a late afternoon appointment though, in case of oversleeping. ;-)
I suggest you go as soon as possible to the docs just so he can get you checked over, could be something simple or could be serious either way get checked out its not right that you feel that way, dont let him fob you off with it being a phase or anything demand tests just to check.
you no your own body and if it dont feel like its right tell.
Good luck with it all
maybe you could help that with changing your eating/drinking habits. Drinking a lot of water and eating lots of vegetables and fruit boost your energy.
You better see your doctor. Sleepiness is one of the symptoms of being a diabetic. Since you're always sleepy better get a driver or else something might happen to you!
I have the same problem! I also went to Tunisia and had an afternoon nap every day, which kind of ruined the holiday! You should go to your doctor and they can give you a blood test to rule out anything like diabetes (that's what they did to me). Could you be stressed and do you eat well? I found that when I was taking exams, I slept more than I do now. But yeah, you should definitely see your doctor. Good luck! :)
Go to your GP straight away. They need to run some tests to rule out anything serious. Could be many things, like seasonal affective disorder, or a thyroid problem, or anemia, even mono. But only your GP can diagnose you.
yes i think you should consult a physician, who will probably ask yoy to make some tests. what are you describing is not normal so there's underlying cause for sure. he just have to dig it out, and when known, you'll be ok.
You need a full medical check up as it may be caused by so many diffferent things.
The thing that springs to mind is sleep apnoea - where you are not getting enough oxygen during sleep due to slight obstruction in your airways/throat. With this you can also have periods of apneoa when you are not breathing at all (usually over 20 seconds but can last much longer).
This results in being extremely tired during the day, lack of energy, feeling worn out, inability to concentrate, falling asleep at odd times during the day.
Have you a partner? Have you asked your partner or another person in the house if you snore as this may be a symptom of SA.
You may need some sleep studies done if the doc thinks this might be the case.
I have had patients who once it has been diagnosed and treated (by wearing a sleep apnoea CPAP mask overnight) say they feel like they are new people.
Hope this miught be a clue. Goodluck.
I would suggest you to not skip the 8-hours sleep-limit, but you already said you tried "less sleep". Why don't you try working out? I know it sounds weird, because working out tires you even more, but it's not exactly like that... Most people after exercising, swimming, jogging and other athletic activities feel better, more healthy. and less tired ( yes, that's true, I done it myself).
This is not normal for such a prolonged period , and you seem to have tried all the options .
You should consult your GP asap , could be related to blood issue and it may just be something quite simple . But you need to find out and get back your zest !!
Good Luck
There are several things it could be and sleep apnea is one of them, you really need to go get checked out, weather it is diabeties or sleep apnea both can lead to other problems,I have both and when you get the help you need you will feel so much better.Good Luck the sooner you go for help the sooner you will feel better.
There are many causes for excessive daytime somnolence (EDS). Obstructive sleep apena is the first that comes to mind, however other conditions such as allergies, depression, restles leg syndrom, and underlying disease processes can contribute as well. It's hard to determine a cause or cure without a COMPLETE workup. You should definately see your MD for one as well as having a sleep study done. If they come back negitive, I would next suggest you seeing an allergest. The next consideration would be to examine your home and work environment for chemicals, and even molds that may be affecting your central nervous system as CNS involvement has been linked to EDS. Hang in there as it can be difficult and frustrating to find the cause and cure for EDS. Good luck.
why havent you already sought help?!! :-) i have been there and know what its like..it starts to rule your life and you go from one sleep to the other...never losing that feeling of lethargy for very long. mine turned out to be epstein barr virus but the doctors took years to diagnose so i would suggest seeing a doctor for tests as well as a naturopath just to be certain. whichever wya you go i hope you get on top of this...all the best wishes to you
RikWilson: If you do find out then let me know. I have tried my GP but without result. I am a depressive (I know that, unfortunately, and I am taking citalopram, but this amount of sleep is far too much? I sleep; get up and then go to bed almost immediately and sleep; then, later in the day, guess what, I sleep. I sleep immediately and usually dream

Few Ideas:
Low thyroid level.
Sleep apnoea(if you're a bit chunky).
Boiler/heater needs service / flu blocked, causing carbon monoxide poisoning.
So seeing your doctor is a good starting point.
Go and get your thyroid gland checked out. Thyroid can make you very tired or very active depending if your thyroid is over or under active.
It sounds to me like you need a full and thorough medical as soon as possible, before you have an accident.
