brain tumors aspartame and siezures.?

Question:
my dad has been recently diagnosed with small cell lung cancer that has spread to several areas of his brain. He has been experiencing small focal siezures which have been controled with Dilantin.last night, he experienced a large siezure which effected his entire body - usually the focal siezures are limited to his left foot or hand..he has been using several packets of equal/nutra sweet during the day - maybe about 10..could this be contributing to the problem? the doctors seem to think that his dilantin was low in his system..he just started radiation on monday, could this be contributing also?
Thanks.

Answers:
I'm not a doctor to tell you yes or no. But i was diagnose with breast cancer earlier this year, and when you are going through chemo all sorts of things can happen to your body. You really need to talk with his doctor. I'll be getting ready to start radiation treatment in a couple of weeks. i don't think radiation has much to do with it. You need to do alot of research on his condition. And the dilantin may have been low. That usually happens and cause them to have seizure. I had an ex that used to take with seizures.

First off let me say that I am sorry that your father is having to go through this. May God grant him and you the strength to face the days ahead.

My 6 year old son has epilepsy(both gran-mal and absence seizures) and I was told by the neurologist not give him anything sweetened with aspartame. They have done studies and have found that in some cases, aspartame were the cause for seizure activity.
As for low levels of Dilantin in the blood, perhaps the dosage is too low? Or his body is having difficulty absorbing the medication. Either way, with anti-seizure medications, blood needs to be drawn on a regular basis to measure the level of medication in the blood, as well as liver toxicity.

I hope this helps, Good Luck to you and your father.
The seizures are most likely an affect of the lung cancer metastases in the brain. They would have been controlled by the dilantin, but if the dilantin levels were too low it would no longer control it.

Many have questioned the affect of aspartame on the brain, but I would not be concerned about it in this case. The tumor is of much greater concern than the affect of an artificial sweetener.
