well the husband of my friend found out about hep c about 5 years ago ...because he was feeling really sick he went to the doctor and they found out he had cirhosis of the liver because he had been carrying hep c for the last thrirty years without knowing it, Now he takes a whole bunch of medicines to keep him alive he stop drinking and smoking cigars (he still love them). We really dont know how long he will live but he is trying to enjoying live now. I looked some information for you:

Cirrhosis is most commonly caused by alcoholism and hepatitis C, and was the 12th leading cause of death in the United States in 2000.[1] Ascites is the most common complication of cirrhosis and is associated with a poor quality of life, increased risk of infections, and a poor long term outcome. In advanced stages of cirrhosis, the condition is irreversible and the only option would be a liver transplant.
Cirrhosis due to autoimmune hepatitis still has 10-year survival of 90%+. There's no specific tool to diagnose autoimmune but it can be beneficial to initiate a trial of corticosteroids.

Yes. My uncle had it about three years ago. He passed away a couple of years after he got it. His liver broke down and stopped working. He had had it for about half a year before he found out he had it.
