Can someone, from experience, tell me the best places to live in with breathing problems?

Question:
I have COPD and asthma and I live in Florida. I hear that it's the worse place to live with breathing problems, and they do seem to be getting worse every year. I cannot handle it much longer and need to live where the climate would be more helpful to my breathing difficulties. Can anyone PLEASE tell me if they have moved somewhere because of breathing problems and have had real good luck with doing so? PLEASE HELP! "suffocating in florida"

Answers:
That could fill all the pages of a book.

I was born with Asthma and as luck would have it, I was also born into a military family. It was bad in California (where it started when I was an infant), it continued in Japan, got it sporadically in Maine (right on the coast) and worsened in Ohio. It was REAL bad in Ohio. I moved to Florida and lived there for 29 years without a single episode. Thinking I had outgrown it - finally - I moved away from that hurricane alley and found a mountain paradise in West Virginia to call home. Two weeks after moving to West Virginia, it caught up with me.

Here's the thing. One doctor I saw in Florida said that he had patients who were born in Florida with asthma and found relief just moving to an entirely different zone in the country. He knew of three that moved from Florida to Ohio and it stopped in Ohio - for them.

When I left Ohio, my aim was to go to Arizona. I went that way and after only a single 24-hour stay in Arizona, I felt like a fish out of water - so headed back eastward. I felt fine in southern Texas, right on the border into Mexico. I stayed there 2 weeks but couldn't find a job and was running out of money - so headed to Florida as a last chance. At least I had friends in FL that I could stay with while I looked for a job - if it was a good fit.

It was. So, since you are in FL and are having trouble, a northern state with all 4 seasons would probably be beneficial to you. It's different for different people.

But, It's not always the climate....

Have you had the whole series of allergy tests: pollens, food, dust, animal dander, feathers? Somehow, it never occurred to my parents to do that. A doctor finally suggested it and they found I was allergic to a whole bunch of foods - some of which were on my "favorite foods list." If you haven't had that done, you might want to consider it. It was a real eye-opener for me. It wasn't the WHOLE problem for me, but it was a contributing factor.

Just a my 2 cents - before you pack your bags.
I heard the higher the humidity, the worse it is for asthma and allergies. Don't move to Arizona- I heard that's the worst state. Sorry I can't help you more. Good question though....
