A hysterectomy can be done a couple of different ways. Either way there is initially pain when you awaken from the surgery but as another answerer said, get a morphine pump if you can. That allows you to self medicate (but not overdose) on the pain medication going direclty into your blood stream. this is opposed to taking pills because there is a delay until those kick in.
If you get a vaginal hysterectomy (Probably not the right term) there are very small incisions in your abdomen and they bring your uterus and cervix out through your vaginal opening. The recovery from this can be shorter. However, depending on how big the fibroids are, sometimes they cannot do it this way.
Another method is to have the uterus removed through a slightly longer incision in your lower abdomen, similar to a c-section.
From my experience if you are having bad symptoms from the fibroids and do not want more or any children it is worth doing. But you don't need to have fibroids or your uterus removed if you don't have any symptoms.

I had it done when I was 25..It wasn't as bad as I had expected. Ask for a morphine pump for when you wake up. You'll be fine.
The recovery is painful but can be controlled with meds. The relief you'll get from having this surgery done is phenonminal and worth the discomfort you'll have for a little while after surgery.
no, it is just like a tumor operation. Most patients would think tumor operation are hurtful, but they're not. You are talking about having a Hysterectomy right? This surgery is used when a woman's fibroids are large, or if she has heavy bleeding, and is either near or past menopause and does not want children. There are various types of hysterectomy that differ in how invasive they are. Sometimes, if the fibroids are large, a woman might need a hysterectomy that involves cutting into the abdomen to remove the uterus. If the fibroids are smaller, the surgeon might be able to reach the uterus through the vagina, instead of making a cut in the abdomen. This surgery may hurt after u have woken up.
I had a hysterectomy and had only a little discomfort for the first few days. But then it also depends on what you get for pain control, how good your surgeon is, and how big a baby you are.
