Staph is found naturally in the environment and is a somewhat common bacteria found in wound infections because of it. There are many different species of Staph - some are more harmful to humans than others. some are more harmful to dogs than others. Practice some simple safety precautions - like wearing latex gloves, washing your hands after treating a wound, etc - and you should be able to avoid getting the infection.
