What is the chance of a child being born with Transposition of the great Arteries? a heart defect?
Question:
Answers:
Actually congenital heart defects occur in 1 of every
125-150 children, so they are quite common.
Of all heart defects, 5% will be transposition of
the great arteries, occurring overall at a rate of
2-3 per 10,000 births. Transposition is more
common in boys than girls.
Other Answers:
i agree with medicgvd.. transposition is as such rare in congenital heart diseases.. most common is Ventricular Septal Defect, but risks may b high for second child as u already hv one with it.. also there's association with Diabetes. it'll b better if u take genatic counselling on this..
You also need to talk with your son's pediatric cardiologist and your OB about the risk of subsequent children having the same defect. Good luck with all this. Kids are now doing very well with these congenital heart defects, and I'll keep you in my thoughts.
