Has anyone heard of this condition?

Question:
An elderly otherwise fit man has been in hospital for 5 weeks now. They are still trying to find out what makes his temperature spike to 106 and then dip back down to below normal. He is perfectly fine when his temp is around 98. but loses consciousness when it spikes high. They even irradiated his white blood cells to try to find infection. There was none. Scans all show clear. Now they want check out the hypothalamus gland. Has any one any info on this type of illness? Thanks. He's getting awfully weak now.

Answers:
Hypothalamus regulated body temperature. Oh so rarely, one can get a splinter hemorrhage in the hypothalamus, that can cause the body's temperature to run a muck. However this is usually picked up with a test called MRI, with contrast. Surely the health care professionals have ran this test if not, ask them to do so. Also I recently had a patient in the ICU for 6 weeks, with the exact symptoms you have described. After a process of ruling out other things, via test, lab, and x-rays. A neurologist was consulted, did a spinal tap, and the patient had WEST NILE VIRUS, a disease usually of equine, however mesquites can and do transmit it to the human population as well. Ask for this test, if it has not already been done.
