Is macular degeneration genetic?

Question:
what about glaucoma? if so, is there a way to test for the gene that carries it? my mom, aunt, and i already have one eye problem inherited from my grandpa who has macular degeneration and my grandma who has glaucoma.
anyway any answers would be helpful.

Answers:
Glaucoma is genetic. Macular degeneration may be genetic but it also is more likely to affect women. Smokers seem to also be at a higher risk for developing. If you haven't - check out the ARED study. They looked at certain vitamins that may delay or reverse AMD.
Lutein was not studied in the ARED study but has since come to be accepted as another key ingredient to have in the diet to help with AMD.
A vitamin that is highly recommended and that I have my father (who has dry AMD) take is a vitamin called MaxiVision. You can order them online and I highly recommend them!
Good luck and regularly see your eye doctor!

Other Answers:
Both my parents have glaucoma. I can possibly inherit the gene from my mother. I have to have regular check ups (once a year) to catch it in time if it ever develops. I almost have a sure chance of getting since both my parents have it.
there are two kinds and one in particular is definitely genetic. check with the opthalmologist, do NOT go to an optomitrist.
yes it may be
My father had macular degeneration and I always ask at the eye doctor, but they have said it isn't hereditary and that my eyes are healthy. Glaucoma, however, can be passed on.
I think it is genetic. Just get regular check ups so they can catch it right away
yes it is heredity
i took my mom to the doctor for that and asked the doctor, he told me it does run in families :-(
as far as I know, macular degeneration is part of getting older, but the degree depends on genetics. My ex-husband had a form of md that was not age-related, and there is a genetic test for it. Good luck!
Yes there is evidence the macular degeneration, along with glacoma are inherited.
The macular degeneration is mostly age related.

Glaucoma can be inherited. My uncle has to be checked for that. As a result of the effects of the glaucoma, he will experience macular degeneration also.

I go for eye exams once a year (for my contacts) and my eye doctor knows about my family history. Eye exams are not that expensive, and totally worth it both for the physical aspect of catching anything early, and the psychological - knowing there isn't anything "bad" happening with your eyes.
Several clinical studies reveal that the underlying cause of age-related macular degeneration is free radical damage or oxidative stress to the macula. Within the eye, high-energy ultraviolet light and the visible blue light creates excessive free radicals. As a person ages, one’s ability to offset these free radicals in order to limit oxidative stress, decreases.
