High blood pressure is a symptom, not the problem. Many things can cause high blood pressure and that is why there are many different kinds of medications. When the physician really doesn't know what is causing the high blood pressure it is called essential hypertension.

Ironically, the first line treatment is diuretics. These are drugs that make you pee. The thinking is that if the volume of blood is reduced, then the blood pressure will also drop. Not only are these drugs effective for treating hypertension, but they are also cheaper. The bad part is that your body can become tolerant of these medications and different ones will need to be added to your regimen. Luckily that is several years in the future.

Key things to remember are to watch the salt in your diet, excercise regularly, and check your blood pressure often (at least once a week every week). You can either purchase a machine to use at home--I recommend this, or you can go to the county health office and have the nurses there take it for you.
