can someone help? I have breathing problems.?

Question:
I am 21 years old and overweight and i smoke. When i walk or do anything sometimes just sittin still I have really hard time breathing and i feel like im gonna pass out.I don't know if cigarettes or being overweight or if i have asthma. Its the worst feeling in the world. Can someone who smoked tell me if that happened to them because of their cigarettes? Can someone overweight tell me if it happened to them? I'm like 50 or 60 pounds overweight.

Answers:
I'm allergic to Mold. But smoking only makes you the perfect target for it. Plus being overweight will cause you to have shortness of breath, even if it is walking. Try to exercise, stop sucking on those death sticks and treat yourself right! You are just taking the fast lane to a very short life!

Fix that roof and look around your house for mold. If found, wipe it down with bleach..if you don't take care of it now it just gets worse and worse. If your lungs are already irritated from the mold, smoking just emphasizes your wheezing, tight chest, and coughing.

You may have some sort of asthma, or a bronchial problem or allergies. Now some people are very allergic to cigarette smoke, have you tried quitting? Thats the first step. I know many people who used the patch. I wish you the best.
Go to the doc and find out what is really going on!! That is not normal and chances are the doctor can help you out a lot!
You may want the doctor run a fasting blood insulin test for hyperinsulinemia. You have some of the warning signs - addiction to tobacco - over weight - difficulty breathing with exercise.

You may want to get some basic info regarding hyperinsulinemia from www.hufa.org.

You sound like me when I was exactly twice your age, except my addiction was to carbohydrates (chocolate, potato chips, etc).

I am getting better. You should be able to, too.
Sounds like you really aren't a hot little blond chick. if you really are what you're saying, i'm sure the answer is obvious.
Your SOB is caused twofold:
your over weight
AND you smoke
and you knew the answer already or you wouldnt have questioned causes
I would have to second Rebeca O's thoughts. That's like the triple-whammy of breathing problems.
#1 ,You should quit smoking or you will have a heart attack.
#2 , Consider getting on a diet and lose the wait.

These are your two alternatives, unless you consider death an alternative ?
It seems like it is a combination of both. Your doctor will tell you that the smoking and the weight are only going to lead to bigger problems. I know you were looking for an easier answer, but dropping the cigs and starting a healthier diet and slowly easing into exercise will be your only bet of relieving the breathing problem. It will be hard to get into exercise because of your breathing problems from cigs, but once you conquer that you will be able to get your lungs back to normal . The longer you wait, the harder it will be and the more you will need to be trying to relieve health wise. i hope the best for you. Also, if there is mold in your house that is probably contributing, but the cigs are the biggest culprit. Best of luck to you.
You should still see a doctor, but it really sounds to me like it's just a combination of the smoking/weight. No amount of medication can substitute for quitting smoking and losing weight.
i think it's both . im a little over weight then the average person! i don't breathe heavy because i walk everday and i don't smoke! my mom was just like you and she's been healthier since she quit smoking!
My best advice to you is go see your doctor ASAP.
I have couple friends with the same what you have described.
They both ended up having a heart bypass surgery.

For those of you're overweight and still smoke, why punish your body?
i am not telling you to stop ur habit but just controll it. try to take deep breathe always.try to do some breathing excercises.
I have asthma and also smoke, not a good match.but it sounds like it may have to do with all of the above, my chest has been hurting several days now, and it's hard to breathe for me, too. when I walk a little bit, I'm panting like I have ran a marthon, so you may have asthma, too.
i quit smoking 11months ago, and breathe a million times better.
try that.
quit..
live longer..
good luck..
I smoke 1 to 1 1/2 packs of cigs a day (real bad), plus I'm overweights of about 85 pounds and I have asthma. I do have a nebulizer that works great.BUT..If I were you, get that mold checked out, you could also be having an allergic reaction and can develop into a more severe problem!

I really don't want to think about what's gonna happen to me due to the smoking, asthma and overweight..I just know I have to change that. Smoking is very hard to quit, I've tried numerous times and I became such a mega-b*tch that people would find me cig butts to smoke or go bum one for me! lol
You can't change everything at once. So right now, I'm starting with the weight and got a treadmill..then I will deal with the smoking.but I will try to cut down first then quit all together, maybe the asthma will not happen as frequent.

But really.check out the mold problem.
I know that being overweight is not fun!You must control yourself over your eating diet and eat healthier! Do not smoke, and if you feel like stopping, visit your doctor, and they can give you anti-smoke medicine! If you like it, I'm sorry, but throw those cigarettes in the bin! You could get lung cancer if you smoke any longer, or even bad teeth! You can choke and I learned that ONE cigarette conatains 6 types of alcohol and urine of an animal! Its gross, so dont have it! You are putting animal pee and 6 types of alchohol into your mouth!!
For youre over weight then just eat right! Maybe a salad, and I do not mean run to Burger King or somethin and take a "whole white meat" chicken nugget pack! I mean run to the grocery store and pick out spinach, lettuce, carrots and tiny tomatoes for your salad as dinner!
The smoking does not help at all. I have COPD, which is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and it sound like that is what you may have, it may or not be combined with asthma. See your doctor and get it treated, with breathing treatments and/or inhalers. But whatever you do STOP SMOKING, you will save money, feel better, sleep better and will not stink with cig smoke. Set a date and stick to it. Use a straw to help, no calories and like a cig you can hold, suck and you won't be tempted to eat instead. It worked for me. Try anything reasonable. Losing weight will probably help too, walk after dinner and meals when you would or ordinarily reach for a smoke, change up your routine, so that it is not centered around smoking. When you quit, reward yourself, with the money you save, get you some flowers to celebrate and start a savings account and put back money you would have spent on cigs, next year you can take a great vacation. Good Luck!

Breathing problems could be due to many reasons. Smoking and Obesity and asthma are 3 of them.
Smoking- if you have been smoking for many years and especially if you are a heavy smoker, it could give you the symptoms you have through lung diseases.

Asthma- Do you wheeze, have a chest tightness or cough? if so asthma may be your problem. If only shortness of breath is your main problem, I would say asthma is unlikely.

Obesity- Do you snor at night? Do you feel tired and fatigued during the day time? do you fall asleep while sitting during the day time? In that case you may have Obstructive sleep apnea- a problem that makes one short winded in addition to the above problems. One needs a sleep study done by Lung doctors for that.

Short windedness on exercise is another symptom of heart diseases. Make sure you don't have any of these.

My advice to you: Go to your doctor today! He/She will find it out!
Good Luck!!
I have a friend with COPD, that's chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. She used to smoke but once she has the disease it is irreversible. Asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema are all under COPD. Now because of her inability to breathe properly without oxygen, she has gained weight due to lack of exercise, which in turn makes it harder on her body to function.
First you need to see a doctor.I'm sure they will tell you that you will have to quit smoking and offer you help. You may need to take a test to see how much lung capacity you have and what can be done to increase it. Then of course the matter of weight loss you will need to lose weight.Even if you didn't smoke you are putting yourself at risk for many things such as high BP,high cholesterol, diabetes, stroke and heart problems. Please don't think that these problems are just for the middle aged or elderly.
Now back to my friend, she is living day to day.She is on oxygen and has to have several breathing treatments a day as well a fear that pneumonia could set in and this time she might not survive through it.Just as an added note; my mom died from lung cancer because she was hooked on cigarettes and it was too late to quit.I will be going to school to become a respiratory therapist in the next year and I'm praying that you please take care of yourself. Just start by seeing your primary care physician and take it from there.I'll pray for you!:)
when you said you have breathing problems -- give me the whole scenario so i can study it.
what exactly were you doing?
what time of the day?
what time of the year? (summer, winter, fall, spring?)
where it happened?
what surrounded you?
what kind of "troubled breathing"? (were you "wheezing?" did your chest feel tight?)
and most of all -- how many years have you been smoking and how many packs a day do you smoke? (very important to know -- so that we could see if this was related to the habit)

the next time you have breathing problems -- try to breathe through your mouth -- are you having the same breathing pattern? or you feel better when you breathe through your mouth.

please don't think that just because you are young and you smoke doesn't mean you won't get breathing problems soon. if you have underlying conditions that we are not aware of, smoking WILL make it worse.

as for the weight issues -- yes, you are overweight -- but not enough that this would cause MAJOR breathing problems. these types of problems occur among people who are morbidly obese, and we call this "pickwickian syndrome" -- where in the weight of the person affects his/her breathing. i don't think you are in that category yet.

my suggestion is try to quit smoking -- and see if you still have breathing problems, try to see and make notes what the problems felt like -- among asthma patients, they would describe their breathing problems when they are having an asthma attack as: it feels like running 5 miles and breathing through a straw -- that's asthma.

also not all breathing problems mean that you have problems in your heart or your lungs. it could be caused by anxiety and panic attack as well.

when is the last time you have had a blood test? have you been diagnosed with diabetes? another reason that would cause breathing problems is kidney failure.

there are so many things that can cause breathing problems. but the safest thing to do now is to change your lifestyle. quit smoking cold turkey, eat healthily and start an exercise regimen. it is never too late to change your lifestyle, especially when you are young. once you have developed a chronic lung problem due to smoking, this will never be cured anymore and we don't want that. and if you don't change your diet and lifestyle, the next thing we will worry about is diabetes and heart problems. among patients i have encountered -- with all these problems -- lung, heart problems and diabetes -- they are the hardest to treat because you cannot mix medications with one another -- and the chances for survival is very very low. if you don't make any changes right now, i can see that these problems will start occuring in your late 30's and early 40's.
Any time you have shortness of breath, there is something wrong. The main cause is definitely the cigarettes. Being overweight is probably secondary. You need to se a physician asap. I was a smoker and overweight and now I may have COPD because of it.
ALL OF THE ABOVE. Smoking and being overweight is a dangerous combination. First, you need to get rid of the cigarettes, then start working on environmental factors i.e.,,, your roof. See a doctor about getting your weight under control. All of these can be fixed. Life is too short to keep living under those conditions. Happiness is only a few a healthy steps away.
