hand held meters do show a difference.about 20-30 is acceptable between glucometer and lab tests.capillaries take time to change their blood glucose levels compared to venous blood esp in the post meal state.
regarding ur monitoring of blood glucose, check it with lab results and preferably with HbA1C levels.glucometers are for gross deviations that is incase u have hypoglycemia or if u suspect high glucose levels

If there is a vast difference, take your meter to your doctor and have him check your meter against his. Remember most diabetic lab tests are run in the morning, when you are fasting. When I test at home the numbers are usually higher throughout the day because I'm eating.
Your doctor should have given you a range of numbers for what your meter should say at different times of the day. The most common guide is a blood sugar of 80-120 in the morning (fasting) and 100-140 before bed. But it's a good idea to ask these questions to your doctor, because only he knows your case and medications if any. Good Luck!
