For me, my symptoms came on like this. About 3 years before I was diagnosed, my eyes temperarily because blurry when seeing at a distance, also I couldn't run two 100-yard dashes (at 15 years of age) without getting severely winded and the coach asked if I was a smoker -I definitely did not smoke. I didn't used to get winded like that after running. After that, I don't really seem to remember any symptoms again until my senior year of high school.
About 1 year before I was diagnosed, I began drinking any kind of liquids I could get my hands on (non-alcoholic) and sleeping more and more. About 10 months before my diagnosis, I went to a physical anaylist to see if they had any answers as to why I was so thin (they measured me at only a 4% body fat at 125 pounds at 5'9" tall), at times I was a light as 118 pounds! They had no answers as to why I was so thin, why I couldn't outrun a 250 pound boy my height in a line drill for baskeball try-outs, why my cloresterol was 290+, why I drank and slept all of the time, and why I had this severe athlete's foot that I could cure. They had asked me if diabetes ran in my family and I said no, so they didn't check my blood sugar (THAT WAS WRONG OF THEM NOT TO DO!). Unfortunately for me, little did they know that I was a full-blown diabetic at the time! They just told me to eat better and that it was just "growing pains".
So from this time until I was diagnosed, I was irritable, fatigued, had no energy, had an insatiable thirst (i.e. cotton mouth), had to urinate heavily whether I drank liquids or not. I knew something was wrong when I didn't drink anything for 4 hours (which was incredibly difficult with cotton mouth the whole time) and still had to go several times as if I had recently drank a gallon of liquid. I would even sleep in class without caring what the teacher thought. I even started skipping classes when I had never done that before. I only cared about drinking, sleeping, and eating -in that order. I had a 10-gallon water cooler on tap as well as a refrigerator completely full of soda and juice, and had to re-stock it every week!
Ok, so what finally got me to get a real physical was when my eyesight got blurry when I was asked to read out loud in class and I told the teacher I couldn't see the words well enough to read. Well, so the next day I went and had a physical done, and the following day I received a phone call from the dr.s office instructing me to, "go to the emergency room immediately!"
Apparently my blood sugars were off the charts. Normal blood sugars average between 80-120. You are probably a diabetic if your 12-hour fasting blood sugars are over 150, mine was over 800! and they couldn't believe that I was not passed out at that super high level.
Anyway, so when I went to the emergency room, that's when they told me that I was diabetic (needless to say), but they had to run some tests to find out which type I was: Type 1 = insulin; or Type 2 = diet or pills to start. I was diagnosed as a "Type 1" diabetic or "Juvenile" as opposed to the much more common "Type 2" or "Adult Onset".
Well, as soon as they started me on insulin, the first thing I noticed was that my insatiable thirst was gone, my althete's foot was clearing up, and even though they put me on the wrong diabetic's 1,500-calorie "Exchange Diet", within the first month, I had gained 40 pounds with plenty of newfound energy. Yes, I was starving through that first month too. LOL They finally upped my diet to 4,500 for a little while and then I regulated it on my own.
Oh yeah, about my eyes, I ended up having cataracts in each eye and they surgically removed them and replaced them with artificial lenses. Another weird thing is that the doctors were saying although cataracts are caused #1 by diabetes, they said that mine was not related to diabetes. Imagine that. LOL
Anyway, I hope my story helped you sort out some of the symptoms associated with diabetes. I guess the latest figures state that 50% of diabetics don't know they have it. So, if you are wondering if you or someone you know has some symptoms, get a simple blood test and that's all it will take to find out for sure.
Prevention? As far as I'm aware, there is no known cause for diabetes, but I'm sure eating a healthy, balanced diet, getting the proper excercise and maintaining a proper weight, and seeing your doctor on a regular basis won't hurt one bit. ;-)
Good health to you!

when my bro got diabetes he pissed a lot, i guess because the glucose goes straight thru and you have to go. Plus he was tired a lot, and he drank a lot of water, which led t more pissing. Just go to the doctor and get your blood sugar tested, its just that little prick on the finger.
Symptoms
-the body gets weak/tired quickly
- lots of urine
- thirsty most of the time
- it's hard to heal even a little wound
Prevention:
- do lots of exercise, jogging or walking is the best
- avoid sugar as much as possible
- avoid foods that contain high carbohidrat
The only symptom I had was that I was sleeping all the time and occasionally, I would have blurred vision if I ate too much. Many diabetics do not have clear symptoms; if you have any of the risk factors as somebody else identified here, you need to go for regular testing, bot IGT and 2-hour glucose tolerance tests. The symptoms of diabetes include:
-Urinating a lot (I think the technical term is polyuria..)
-Feeling thirsty a lot. and nothing will quench it (The technical term is. oh man, uhh. I don't know, poly-something..)
-Lack of energy
-Eyesight becomes blurry
-Having a weird, fruity taste in your mouth. it'll be noticable in your breath.
You cannot really prevent diabetes. at least not Type 1.
You can, however, prevent Type 2 by exercising and eating healthy!
Good luck!
