After heart bypass can one still be a canditate for kidney transplant?

Question:
My father is trying to get on the list for a kidney transplant. He recently had a cathorization on heart and found while doing that he has blockages. If he gets the bypass will he still be eligalbe to get on the kidney transplant list

Answers:
Yes, he would still theoretically be a candidate for transplant. In fact, he would have to have a stable cardiovascular situation before he would be safe for transplant surgery.

Good luck, the waiting list is long.

Other Answers:
only if the doctor says so
To be on a transplant list, your heart needs to be able to handle the stress of the operation itself. The drs. do stress tests to be sure of this. If his heart can handle the operation, then he can be listed. Good luck.
Interestingly enough, in some cases, the heart may actually be stronger following a bypass surgery. Whether or not it is going to be strong enough to withstand the kidney surgery is another question. I am currently a Med student studying to be a cardiothoracic surgeon, so here are my two cents.

A person can survive with about Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) above 15. However, a person cannot survive if they have 85% blockages in their heart. The smart thing to do would get the heart taken care of, and then deal with the kidney. Even if he is not going to be eligible for the transplant, dialysis will prolong his life.
I am not sure how it affects the receipient but I know that if a potential donor has a heart attack they are no longer eligible for donating.

I am currently waiting for a 3rd kidney transplant. My husband was going to be my donor until he had a massive heart attack and quadruple bypass surgery. Now he is no longer considered a viable donor.

Part of my work up was seeing a cardiologist. If anything had been found wrong in my heart and the surrounding chambers, I would have been removed from the kidney transplant list. I pray your father is eligible. I am doing dialysis again for the 3rd time since 1985 and I know what type of life we lead.

Good luck!
