Cause of Fungus Infection?

Question: Will having sex cause fungus infection at vagina?Why? The last time he have sex was one year ago with his ex gf.if he have the infection why it only occur after one year later he have sex again?Is it means his ex have the infection and passed it to my bf?when we did it, he pass it to me?
