anybody try beta glocan or nsc24 as a supplement b4 chemo?

Question:
i seen an add on tv. they say it helps recovery time . i'm desperate

Answers:
You should, of course, consult your physician and get the opinions of other doctors. When I found out that I had cancer, the first thing I did was start taking large doses of immune stimulators, which included beta glucans, not from yeast, like nsc24, but from medicinal mushrooms and mushroom extracts. I am now in remission from squamous cell carcinoma AND hepatitis C.

Yeast derived beta glucan does cause immune stimulation, but the beta glucans derived from mushrooms like maitake and reishi, are much more powerful and have been used in TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) for centuries. I would not waste my money on the yeast product.

In most cases, immune stimulating supplements can be continued during chemotherapy. One of the problems of chemotherapy is that it inhibits your immune system and thereby opens your body up to "opportunistic" infections. Keeping medicinal mushrooms or their derivatives (by derivatives I refer to commercial products such as AHCC or Maitake Gold) in your system will reduce side effects and hasten recovery time.

I should emphasize this: supplements that work in some manner besides stimulating the immune system have the possibility of interfering with chemotherapy DURING the chemotherapy, so you do need to consult with a physician. Doctors do occasionally run into bizarre side effects, such as prolonged bleeding time, from a patient's undisclosed use of complementary products.

What I am writing here is my opinion, not medical advice, since I am not a doctor. I do have a degree in biochemistry, though, so I feel free to give my opinion on biochemical matters.

For good anticancer protocols, see the Life Extension Foundation's website.
