Question:
Answers:
You have to get at least a Bachelors degree in a related field, ie: nursing or nutrition. Then you have to work in diabetes and document your hours. 2000 hours are required. Then you take a test. Its a really easy test if you've worked with diabetics and especially if you have diabetes! Good luck!
Other Answers:
start at your local American Red Cross and your local hospital, if you cant do anything through them they will al least be able to point you in the right direction.
There schools for CDE. However, you must have a medical related background, worked in the [related medical] field for a year or more [get 2000 hours] to attend the classes for CDE. If you qualify, do go for it. There are websites with additional information - do a google search.
national certification board for diabetic educators must be a clinical physiologist,RN,OT,PT,MD,RD or PA to apply for certification along with minimal hour of instruction (1000+) within 5 years and practice experience with diabetic self management. the NCBDE has a web site and information on education. don't let this discourage you, after 17 years teaching patients i got my CDE in 2004. and there are local programs who use volunteers to help teach new diabetics and support lifers. good luck
college.
