I would like to know if you increase your odds of getting sick from air conditioning? Real facts or studies?

Question:
My wife thinks you get sick from air conditioners. I believe that it promotes the growth of mold and bacteria. That to me is not to convince me on this subject. If that was the case people would be sick all the time. Like aids your body couldent handel it. Be sides I think ac in your car would be worse. If anybody has any clinical studies or point me in the right direction to some. Thanks

Answers:
I don't know of any specific studies about air conditioning. However, I do know from experience that evaporative coolers promote the growth of mold and bacteria, due to the humidity they produce. Mold and bacteria also can grow on the cooler itself. Air conditioners, due to being more dry, inhibit the growth of mold and bacteria. Air conditioning also helps keep out pollens and allergens from the outside air. This can mean fewer lung and sinus infections for allergy and asthma sufferers.

That's not to say they're automatically more healthy. Stale air isn't so good for us; we need fresh air circulating. And, dry air means dry nasal passages and airways, which means they're in less-optimal condition to help us fight off cold, flu, and little infections we encounter. So, depending on your local climate, and your allergy/asthma situation, air conditioning could be healthier, or it might not be.

Other Answers:
Air conditioning can either be good or bad for your health depending on whats inthe air in your home or what allergies you have. It takes the humidity out of the air which is good for people with fibermyalgia and arthritis, but if you have a lot of mold, dust, or bacteria\viruses from people being sick, then air conditioning can push this stuff around in the air of your home assisting in making people ill. If this is the case get an air purifier and use in conjunction to your air conditioner. As for the car if you have allergies, then its very bad for you since a lot of dust collects in the car that you can't get to to clean.

Two schools of thought:

1. Recycled air doesn't allow for fresh air.

2. last night on the news, there was a story that suggested that air conditioning fools your body into thinking it's cold and this tells you body to put on weight to protect you from the cold.

True or not.you decide
