How can I get a genetic test done to determine if I am a carrier of the Leukemia genetic mutation?
Question:
Answers:
I do research on chronic myeloid leukemia, and I have never heard of anyone who had the Philadelphia-translocation (the mutation, which is thought to cause this disease), as an inherited mutation.
I am not aware of increased risk of leukemia in the children of CML patients. There are scattered reports of supposedly familial cases of CML, but that's it.
Your children may or may not get leukemia, pretty much like with everyone else. Right now, I don't see how anyone could calculate the odds.
But, I suppose, life is much more, than odds. so don't worry much, take care!
After 40 years of the practice of hematology and oncology I have never heard of the gene to which you refer. Chronic myeloid seldom runs in families as acute leukemias do.It is not uncommon for several children in a family to get acute leukemia.
The genetic mutation is not there all the time. There is no test. The gene mutation is the cancer. Leukaemia is not ment to run in families, like some cancers. Treatment for leukaemia can cause infertility, this is something you need to talk to a specialist about. Good luck to you both
