Most people have them because of heridity and the pigments in their skin. Like redheads..usually have more freckles. You can get them or make them darker by getting in the sun. When you get older, they will hide a lot of small wrinkles, so if you have them, ENJOY!

Freckles result from melanocytes in the lower epidermis producing melanin a dark colored skin pigment especially useful for protecting your skin from the sun.

Also too much exposure can cause the melanocytes to reproduce rapidly and uncontroled. This is the cancer known as melanoma and is especially deadly.
Freckles:
A predisposition to freckles is genetic and is related to the presence of the melanocortin-1 receptor MC1R gene variant. Freckling is caused by the same process that produces sun tanning, although the distribution of melanin is not the same. Light skin and (especially) red hair are associated with an increased likelihood of being able to develop freckles.
Freckles are predominantly found on the face, although they may appear on any skin exposed to the sun. Freckles are rare on infants, and common on children aged 5 to 15; they are less common on adults.

You probably inherited it from your Irish uncle. It's just spotty skin pigmentation.
