When does one need a ct scan after kidney cancer surgery?
Question:
Answers:
This is totally up to your doctor. However, my oncologist has been following me every three months since!
Two reasons : to make sure the surgeon got all of the cancer out, and to make sure the cancer has not spread.
This would have to depend on what type of tumor it was and what stage. Wilms stage 1 would be a different protocol than renal cell carcinoma or something with metastasis.
Best to just consult with nephrologist and oncologist on protocol for stage and tumor. and if you're inquiring because you have a child with Wilms tumor, contact me offlist and/or contact NWTSG (National Wilms Tumor Study Group) to determine what best practice is for stage of tumor noted during surgery.
It really just depends. I believe my son had a post surgery CT before we left the hospital (It has been a year and a half so I am a little fuzzy on dates). I know he had one a couple of months afterwards.
