Is my high blood pressure meds. causing me to gain weight?

Question:
I also take meds.for Cholesteol, Acid Reflux, Arthritus, and for depression. My appitite is almost nill. I can't walk too far before the pain is too overwelming in my hips. I get tired very fast and I want to sleep. My husband and daughter can attest to my lack of appitite. Could accupunture help? Can I take anything to counter my lack of energy without jeperdising my blod pressure condition?

could be, that's why you should also exercise, that will keep you in check and also make the medicine work better
Just a suggestion. Have you been tested for sleep apnea? I have sleep apnea and after getting help, I have more energy.
Good Luck
I'm no doctor, and you don't even say what blood pressure meds you are on. But unless you are using a diuretic, I wouldn't be surprised if you have a water-retention problem that is showing up as weight gain. It would also be consistent with your leg pains. Of course, I haven't even looked at you, so I am in the dark and guessing here, but what you describe sounds pretty familiar.

I assume you have talked with your doctor about all this, including especially your leg problem. I do NOT think you should be taking more medicine, even over the counter stuff, without talking with your doctor. Once you are on an extensive drug regimen like yours, it becomes very tricky to keep everything in balance. Any new medicine is likely to have some effect that either reduces the effectiveness of another drug or enhances it too much. Don't experiment with this sort of thing.

As to acupuncture, I am no expert, but a lot of people seem to get help that way. You might even need to look at things like your posture and spinal alignment. For that, I would prefer to talk with an osteopath than a chiropractor, because osteopaths also have medical training.

Good luck. You are in a difficult spot, I know. I am on a whole lot of medicines myself (32 pills and capsules a day, sigh) so I know some of what you are facing.
No, bp meds should not make you gain weight, but if you're taking steroids for the arthritis, that surely will. And can also affect your sleep and energy levels. Although...if you have a weight problem, and tend to fall asleep whenever you sit still, you might consider being tested for diabetes--this is a very common side-effect, along with excessive thirst and dry skin.
Also, regardless of your pain from arthritis, if you can move, you should exercise--regular, mild use of the extremity in question can often alleviate much of the condition.
Plus, if you have a weight problem, though losing the extra will generally help you altogether, you should not try to lose by just not eating, whatever your appetite. Sensible, moderate meals low in fats and sugar and high in fruits and vegetables do a lot more to control your weight than just not eating. In fact, the less you eat, the more your body thinks you're starving, the less it uses--it's a vicious cycle.
But, you might try taking cinnamon capsules--50 mil twice a day. This has been known to cause significant improvement in both blood sugar and blood pressure levels, in conjunction with a healthy regimen.
Ok, I was in much the same boat....this is what I am doing, I take 150mg of DHEA, 120mg of CoEnzyme Q10 and 500mg of sublingual B12.....all are available over the counter.....and my blood pressure meds have been cut in half and I no longer take an antidepressant! I have boundless energy, and as a result I've lost 25 pounds in four months! Do your own research, there is alot of information on the web on each of these supplements I've mentioned. But, it helped me, it may help you.
It sounds to me like lack of activity is causing you to gain weight. Pain in your hips will definitely get a girl off her feet and onto the couch. Interestingly enough, the thing that will make you feel better and make your pressure go down is EXERCISE. I know, it sounds crazy, but exercising will increase your endurance and you won't fee so tired doing normal everyday activities. Ask your doctor about getting into a cardiac rehab program where your heart is monitored as you exercise. With hip pain, water exercise is the best. It will take the pressure off your hips and allow you to exercise without pain. Weight lifting will increase your metabolism and make you burn more calories at rest, thereby allowing for weight loss. Blood pressure meds are famous for making people feel tired. If you push yourself, and exercise through it, you will gain more stamina and the little things wont wear you out. Remember, start out easy, and include all three types of physical exercise in your work out. Flexibility Aerobic, and Weight Training. Good Luck!
depression meds will cause weight gain but not the blood pressure pills.sometimes we have to push ourselfs to walk even if it is painful to us becuz we r the only ones that can help ourselfs.
It sounds to me like you are not only sick and tired but you are sick and tired. I would like to issue a challenge to you to read the side effects to the medications you are taking. I think you will see allot of the symptoms that you are having in this information. the pain you feel in your hips could be due to the Arthritis medication you are taking. kind of unbelievable I know but just do some research on the side effects and you will be amazed at how many of the symptoms appear in these categories. If you are interested I would be more than Happy to share more information with you.
