After having your thyroid removed, can this result in low iron in the bloodstream?

Question:
My wife had a thyroidectomy and takes synthroid, calcium, and another supplement. Now she has low iron. She's been checked and doen NOT have internal bleeding. She's taking proferrin, but the doctor says her iron is still low. She recommends doubling the proferrin. Is this the best course, or is there another cause for the low iron? She had a cancerous tumor removed from her leg 8 years ago, but all checkups since then have been clear. Any ideas?

Answers:
The thyroid has nothing to do with iron issues. Instead, it is precisely what the other two respondents have said - our bodies absorb iron slowly and some conditions just develop.
maybe she has become iron resistant such as my self. i take 200 mg of iron tabs 2 times a day. so i dont think she has anything to worry about but i think that she would be very happy to know that someone cares so much about her.
